An Original Super Duty Radiator

John Chonacas supplied our super duty radiator

It was a few years ago, Roger Rosebush had almost given up hope at finding a Super Duty radiator for the #50 Pontiac Tempest project. In fact, unable to find anything original, he had a special radiator built. Then, on January 1, 2020, he received a surprising call. John Chonacas had seen an ad about the project car and it piqued his interest. Being a long-time Pontiac man he just had to learn more. He called up the number in the ad and discovered Roger. They had talked quite a while about the Tempest project and other Pontiac subjects when John sent Roger a photo of a radiator he owned. It was an original Super Duty radiator! It was just what the #50 Tempest needed. They set a time to meet at John’s home to pick up the radiator.

John had previously worked as a detail metal fabricator and finisher for ASC’s (American Sunroof Company) automotive division. He learned a great deal about Pontiacs while spending his off-hours restoring many of them with his good friend Mac McKellar (Pontiac’s Chief Engine Engineer from about 1937- 1982). All the while he was acquiring miscellaneous Pontiac parts.

When Roger went to meet John, he knew he was in the right place. John had other original parts, perfect for the project car that would keep the build as correct and original as possible. Roger and John got along exceptionally well and soon John was introducing Roger to other important Pontiac enthusiasts around the Detroit area.

Being of Greek heritage, with a long family line that goes way back to a family monastery near Greece, John is a family man who cares for his 94-year-old mother and believes that family is everything. When not taking care of important family matters, he spends his time nowadays finding parts to add to his stockpile or trading with other enthusiasts he has discovered along the way.

A big thank you goes out to John for sharing his knowledge with the team. This project could not have been completed as well as it has without his help and we appreciate all of his contributions. Not only did we receive knowledge and the parts we needed, but a friendship that will last. Plans for other projects are already in the works.
