Driven Racing Oil Lubricants

One of the major goals when re-creating the #50 Pontiac Tempest was to use as many original, period-correct parts as possible. Over the years, the knowledge and science of using correct lubricants is vastly superior to what was known in 1963. In order to properly protect its components and get as much horsepower out of the car, the #50 Tempest team exclusively selected products by Driven Racing Oil.

The Driven Racing Oil brand was originally created to advance engine and driveline lubricant performance in professional racing. Today, their innovations extend beyond the racetrack to include street performance and so much more. Whether you have a high-performance or vintage engine, Driven has a system of oils tailored to protect your specialty engine from break-in to full throttle.

Their product development team is constantly looking at the engine and how it is used; then they design application-specific products using a “zero compromise” approach that delivers a measurable performance advantage. The results are more horsepower and less wear.

Oils For the Tempest

For the #50 Tempest’s lubrication, the first selected was Driven’s GP-1 15W-40 Engine Oil. It is compatible with Methanol, E85, and high-octane race fuel. It is designed for all high-performance builds, ideally street-track performance vehicles, perfect for the Tempest.

For the rear end of the car there was no question but to use Driven’s Limited Slip Gear Oil 75W-90. It is ideal for both clutch type and torsion type differentials, this proven formulation utilizes a proprietary additive package that reduces drag, resists foaming and maintains its viscosity under extreme heat and high loads. It delivers outstanding performance in extreme environments like autocross, off-road trucks, UTVs, track day cars and race vehicles.

Lastly, for the transmission, the team chose Driven’s GL-4 Gear Oil 80W-90. Driven’s GL-4 Gear Oil protects yellow metals and provides proper synchronization to prevent clashing in synchronized manual transmissions. Containing high-quality base oils for high-shear race protection and extended change intervals, it is recommended for any race or street performance machine.

Driven Racing Oil was wonderful to work with and offered us great customer service. A big Thank-You to the guys at Driven Racing Oil and GM Engineering for working with us on the #50 Tempest project.

Driven Racing Oils is based in Memphis, Tennessee has been around since 1999, and was created out of a need to stop flat-tappet camshaft failures in NASCAR cars. drivenracingoil.com.
